Sharp Galapagos 5.5-inch

Released December, 2010

Product Shot 1The Sharp Galapagos 5.5-inch is one of two Cloud-based, eBook reading tablets featuring the Android operating system. The more mobile 5.5” Galapagos features a smaller 1024x600-pixel HD LCD display, but adds along a trackball that critics say is redundant and completely useless.

Otherwise a duplicate, the tablet hosts Wireless N connectivity, access to thousands of electronic media (books, magazines, etc.), and a specialized service (Automated Scheduled Delivery Service) that lets users subscribe to regularly updated periodicals. Unfortunately there have been similar complaints from the 5.5” as its larger peer, including a sluggish interface. There is however support for Flash 10.

Additional Information

The Galapagos was initially released in Japan (2010), so it’s XMDF compliant and it supports Japanese expressions like vertical writing and ruby. It was later ported to the rest of the world in 2011.
